EXW (Ex Works) is an incoterm that only requires the seller to make the goods available for pickup by the buyer at the seller’s premises or another named location. This doesn’t mean that there is no obligation remaining for the seller — such as costs for customs clearance, shipping to a destination, and other duties. This Incoterm is usually used when the exporter is shipping directly to a buyer and wants the buyer to arrange for import clearance. The exporter can use this term even if the shipment is going through an intermediate carrier. The buyer is responsible for all costs associated with export clearance, transportation and insurance. The seller, however, is required to provide any necessary documents or information that the buyer requires to import the goods. For example, if required by law or contract, the seller must provide an invoice stating that they are exporting goods from their location.
